History of the Avalon Benefit 50 Mile Run
One of the country's most challenging and scenic 50-milers-no cars, no smog, just great terrain, incredible views, fascinating historical sites, a well-organized race, nice people, great food . . . and even an occasional buffalo sighting. ALL proceeds from entry fees and sponsored mileage go to charity and is a fundraiser for the Avalon Lion’s Club. Recipients include: Avalon Hospital, Avalon High School scholarships, Catalina Conservancy, Bill Putnam Health Care Fund.

Race Directors Letter
June 2007
Dear Runner,
Welcome to the 27th Annual Avalon Benefit 50-Mile Run. The Run will start at 5:00 a.m., Saturday January 12th at the foot of the green pier on Crescent Avenue. There is a 12-hour cut-off time for the race, so stragglers will be on their own after 5:00 p.m.
We strive to provide each of you an extraordinary running experience and a good old fun time. In return, we wish to remind you that this is a “BENEFIT RUN” and we would greatly appreciate it if you would please take the time to gather sponsorships for the miles that you run, register them on our SPONSOR SHEET and turn them in at the briefing meeting on Friday night.
We extend our WARMEST THANKS and appreciation to those of you who gather sponsorships year after year. Please note that all of the entry fees combined, depending upon the total number of entries, barely covers the costs of putting on the race. Therefore, the sponsor pledge sheets are the only way we raise money for our various charities.
For you new runners, this race is for the benefit of a variety of island charities, including the Avalon Hospital, Avalon High School Scholarships, the Catalina Island Conservancy, the Bill Putnam Health Care Fund and other local organizations. Please help us raise money by asking for sponsorships. NO AMOUNT IS TOO SMALL (or too large!).
Remember to bring clothing that will adapt to the weather and a flashlight for the early morning start and initial run. Be sure to label any articles you want back! Also note: DROP BAGS AT LITTLE HARBOR ONLY!
Reminder runners MUST pick up their own packet. No Substitutes! The December 29th Cut-off will be enforced so register early. The banquet dinner, after the race will be held at the World Famous Casino with entertainment and an awards ceremony.
There will be a pre-race orientation meeting on Friday night at the Catherine Hotel on Crescent Street.
Sincerely,
Mike Bone/Race Director
